Electional astrology – choosing favourable timing

Choose favourable timing for important events and decisions through electional astrology.

Electional astrology explores the timing of important events and decisions. It uses astrological techniques to identify a potentially favourable moment to begin something – from a business venture or important conversation to a wedding, journey or other significant undertaking.

Rather than asking what a particular moment means, electional astrology asks a different question:

When might be a good time to begin?

What is electional astrology?

Electional astrology is a branch of astrology concerned with choosing a time to start an event or activity.

The astrologer considers planetary positions and other astrological factors to identify a time that is traditionally regarded as supportive of the purpose of the event.

It is sometimes described as choosing an “auspicious” moment.

The underlying idea is simple: if we cannot control everything that happens in life, perhaps we can sometimes choose when we begin.

What can electional astrology be used for?

Depending on the astrologer’s approach, electional astrology may be used to explore timing for:

  • Business – launching a company, signing an agreement or beginning a major project.
  • Relationships – weddings, engagements or other important relationship milestones.
  • Travel – choosing a time to begin a significant journey.
  • Creative work – launching a book, exhibition, performance or other project.
  • Important conversations – choosing a time for a significant meeting or discussion.
  • Major decisions – selecting a moment to begin an important course of action.
  • Personal projects – starting something meaningful that you want to give the best possible conditions.

The suitability of electional astrology depends on the event and the astrologer’s particular tradition.

How does electional astrology work?

An astrologer considers the possible times available for an event and examines the astrological charts for those moments.

They may consider factors such as:

  • planetary positions
  • the Moon’s condition and movement
  • aspects between planets
  • the Ascendant and houses
  • the condition of planets associated with the purpose of the event

The astrologer then looks for a time that fits the intention of the event as closely as possible.

For example, an electional astrologer helping someone launch a business may look for a chart that symbolically supports themes such as growth, stability, visibility or communication.

The exact techniques vary considerably between traditions. If you’d like to understand how electional astrology fits within the wider landscape, our guide to different types of astrology explains the main traditions, approaches and techniques.

Does electional astrology guarantee success?

No.

Choosing an astrologically favourable time cannot guarantee that an event will succeed.

There are too many other factors involved in real life – preparation, circumstances, other people’s decisions, resources and plain old human unpredictability.

Electional astrology is better understood as a timing practice within an astrological framework.

For people who find astrology meaningful, choosing a particular moment can also give an event a sense of intention and symbolism.

You’re not handing responsibility for the outcome to the planets.

You’re choosing a moment deliberately.

What information does an astrologer need?

This depends on the event and the astrologer’s method.

You’ll normally need to tell the astrologer:

What you are planning
Be as specific as possible about the event or activity.

Where it will happen
Location can affect the chart and therefore the available electional options.

The possible dates and times
The more flexibility you have, the more choices your astrologer may have when looking for a suitable moment.

You may also be asked about any practical restrictions.

If your wedding venue is only available on one Saturday, for example, there isn’t much point discovering that Tuesday three weeks earlier would have produced the astrologically perfect chart.

Astrology does occasionally have to negotiate with the venue manager.

Can electional astrology be used for any event?

Not necessarily.

Some events have very little flexibility around their timing.

Others are naturally suited to electional work because you can choose when to begin.

An astrologer may also advise you that a particular event isn’t well suited to electional astrology or that the available options are limited.

A good practitioner should work with the practical realities of your situation rather than pretending that astrology can override them.

Who might find electional astrology useful?

Electional astrology may appeal if you:

  • have an important event coming up
  • have some flexibility around when it begins
  • want to choose a meaningful starting point
  • are interested in traditional astrology
  • are planning a business or creative launch
  • are arranging an important ceremony or milestone
  • enjoy approaching major decisions thoughtfully and symbolically

It can be particularly interesting for people who enjoy the idea that when we begin something can be part of its story.

How to choose an electional astrologer

Electional astrology is a specialized technique, so look for someone who explicitly offers electional consultations. Our guide to choosing the right astrologer covers the wider questions worth considering when selecting a practitioner.

Consider:

  • Their tradition – particularly whether they work with traditional electional techniques.
  • Their experience – look for evidence that they regularly practise electional astrology.
  • Their methodology – ask what factors they consider when selecting a time.
  • Their practical approach – a good astrologer should work within the real dates and times available to you.
  • Their communication style – they should be able to explain why a particular time has been chosen.

If the event is particularly important, give the astrologer as much notice as possible. More flexibility usually means more potential times to consider. Before booking, our guide to questions to ask an astrologer can help you think about what to clarify with your practitioner.

Before you book

Think carefully about what you’re starting and why the timing matters.

Give yourself as much flexibility as possible. If you can provide several possible dates and a reasonable range of times, your astrologer will have more opportunities to find a suitable election.

Have the event location ready and explain any practical restrictions.

Most importantly, remember that electional astrology isn’t about finding a magical moment that guarantees success.

It’s about choosing a moment with intention.

Sometimes the most meaningful thing astrology can offer isn’t a promise about what will happen.

It’s the opportunity to pause before you begin and ask:

What kind of energy do I want to bring into this?

  • My sessions are a conversation. I read your birth chart as a living map of your personality, emotional patterns, strengths, growth edges, and life direction. Then we explore together how those themes are showing up in your life right now. Every placement exists on a spectrum, so I begin with the full range of what a placement can mean and let your lived experience guide where we go deeper. I practice evolutionary astrology, which treats the chart as a tool for awareness and conscious choice. Your chart describes the terrain. You decide how you move through it. First sessions run 90 minutes. We build the foundation of your natal chart and look at the timing that's active in your life right now. This session is the starting point for any deeper work together. Follow-up sessions focus on specific transits, decisions, or challenges you're moving through. All sessions are confidential and follow the OPA Ethical Guidelines.

My goal is for you to walk away feeling prepared, reassured and inspired.

  • One-to-one chart readings and coaching partnerships (individuals and couples); archetypal astrology workshops exploring desire, power, and relational archetypes, run privately or in small groups over three or four consecutive sessions, in person or via Zoom. I think of our work together as a journey in which you are the explorer and I am your cartographer and navigator. I'll prepare your chart in advance and bring it to our first session as a map: a circle of the Zodiac showing the planets and celestial objects positioned at the time and place of your birth. We "discover" it together — I highlight the strengths and challenges it suggests, and we talk through how you currently relate to them, or don't. From there, you decide which territory to explore further. Many of the people I work with are drawn to questions of power, control, and the more intense or transgressive corners of desire — in confidence, in relationships, in the roles they play with others and the ones they've outgrown. For them, the chart offers a map before the territory is even entered. Others come for more familiar reasons: self-esteem, direction, feeling stuck, wanting to reclaim a sense of agency most of us were never taught to trust. Your chart doesn't predict what you'll find. It shows you where to look. Issues and questions clients bring:
Anxiety, self-esteem, intimacy, lack of agency, career change, powerlessness, trust, boundaries, consent, gender, body image, belonging, and power or control dynamics within relationships.

  • My approach to readings is that we must start with a rectified chart. Then we can look at the chart to see your strengths and the areas that need more work. I don't believe in sugar-coating things because if it is going to snow, you need to know that mukluks will be necessary, so you don't go out in a bathing suit.

Depending on their needs, I can look at their natal chart, transits, the solar return chart, progressed chart, annual profections, and zodiacal releasing periods. My goal with each reading is to make sure the client walks away feeling hopeful, cared for, and satisfied.
